Who Will Pioneer the Next Web?

The question of who will shape the next iteration of the web is central. Mozilla aims to empower individuals to contribute to this future. The organization is dedicating resources to integrate experienced builders into Mozilla for a structured, temporary period. These individuals will collaborate with New Products leaders to develop tools and products for the evolving web.

This initiative is known as Mozilla Pioneers. Applications are currently open and will close on Monday, February 16, 2026.

A Distinct Program from a Unique Organization

Mozilla’s mission focuses on maintaining the internet as a global public resource, open and accessible to everyone. Many talented, experienced, and thoughtful technologists, designers, and builders share this commitment to the internet but may seek an environment for exploration that differs from the broader tech industry.

This is the void that Mozilla Pioneers aims to address.

Pioneers is intentionally structured to enable participation from individuals who might not typically have opportunities to create new products. The program offers compensation, flexibility (allowing part-time involvement if necessary), and a defined scope. It avoids requiring participants to risk their financial stability to explore internet improvements.

    Embracing Moments of Transformation

Significant advancements often occur during periods of rapid change, when the cumulative effects of shifts are not widely understood. This principle underscores the value of initiatives that foster innovation. Mozilla’s New Products division, for instance, has supported the development of notable tools such as Solo, Tabstack, 0DIN, and an enterprise version of Firefox.

    Transforming the Approach

Pioneers is structured to provide an environment for technologists—individuals proficient in code, product development, and systems—to collaborate with Mozilla on fundamental concepts for AI and the web, aligning with shared values.

The program seeks individuals for collaboration, emphasizing partnership over idea competition; applicants are not required to submit a pitch deck. The vision for Pioneers includes:

    • Pioneers are paid. Participants receive compensation for their time and work.
    • It’s flexible, designed so participants can be in the program and continue to work on existing commitments. Participants do not have to put their life on hold.
    • It’s hands-on. Builders work closely with Mozilla leaders to prototype and pressure-test concepts.
    • It’s bounded. The program is time-limited and focused, with clear expectations on both sides.
    • It’s real. Some ideas will move forward inside Mozilla. Some will not – and they’ll still be valuable. If it makes sense, there will be an opportunity to join Mozilla full-time to bring a concept to market.
    • Applications are open Monday, January 26, and close Monday, February 16, 2026.

Pioneers is distinct from an accelerator or a conventional residency. It offers a platform to explore foundational ideas for AI and the web within a high-trust setting, with the potential for continued work at Mozilla.

Information about the program is available at Mozilla Pioneers.
