WhatsApp has begun implementing a new security measure aimed at preventing spyware attacks, according to a recent company announcement.
This new functionality, known as Strict Account Settings, will prevent the reception of attachments and media from individuals not saved in a user’s contact list. WhatsApp stated in a blog post that this feature is specifically tailored for journalists and other public figures who might face “rare and sophisticated cyber attacks” and require enhanced protection.
WhatsApp describes Strict Account Settings as a “lockdown-style feature.” This approach mirrors Apple’s introduction of a similar lockdown mode in July 2022, which limits device functionalities to enhance security against spyware threats.
The company’s blog post referenced a 2019 spyware incident where approximately 1,400 WhatsApp users were targeted by NSO Group’s potent zero-click Pegasus commercial surveillance tool.
A federal judge ruled in December that NSO Group is prohibited from utilizing WhatsApp’s infrastructure for future spyware attacks. NSO Group is currently challenging this injunction, claiming the order could lead to its bankruptcy.
This new WhatsApp feature is expected to be progressively rolled out over the next few weeks.
