Pinterest, the popular social media platform, is reportedly preparing to lay off a significant portion of its workforce, with up to 675 employees expected to be impacted. This move comes as the company announced a strategic shift to prioritize artificial intelligence development.
A recent report from CNBC highlighted the impending job cuts. A securities filing submitted by Pinterest earlier this month explicitly stated that the company plans to “reallocate resources” towards AI-focused teams and to prioritize “AI-powered products and capabilities.” This indicates a clear intention to invest more heavily in AI technology.
The layoffs are projected to affect nearly 15 percent of Pinterest’s total workforce. This contributes to a growing trend of job reductions linked to AI advancements. A report by consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicated that almost 55,000 jobs were eliminated in 2025 due to AI. Pinterest aims to complete these workforce adjustments by September 30, 2026.
The company’s filing also mentioned a reconfiguration of its sales and marketing strategies, which could suggest specific departments that may experience these layoffs.
Interestingly, Pinterest gained recognition from AI critics last October for being one of the first major social media platforms to allow users to filter out AI-generated content from their feeds. Given Pinterest’s reliance on visual content, the platform was seeing an influx of AI-generated “slop,” prompting user dissatisfaction and leading to the introduction of this filtering option.
Despite offering users the ability to manage AI content, Pinterest has simultaneously increased its focus on integrating AI into its platform. In late October, the company introduced “Pinterest Assistant,” an AI-powered shopping tool designed to enhance the user experience.
Earlier this year, discussions also circulated regarding a potential acquisition of Pinterest by AI giant OpenAI. However, these rumors have not been substantiated by any official reports.
