To support this expansion, three leaders are taking on additional responsibilities.

Mark Chen has been appointed Chief Research Officer. In this expanded capacity, Mark will lead scientific advancements, ensuring the continuous pushing of frontiers in AI capability and safety. His role involves closely integrating research and product development to facilitate the rapid translation of research into user-loved products. Mark has a long tenure at OpenAI, having evolved from a researcher into a leader over many years.

Brad Lightcap, as Chief Operating Officer, is expanding his responsibilities to oversee OpenAI’s business and daily operations. Brad will direct global deployment efforts, focusing on business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure, and operational excellence to maximize the impact of the company’s research. Brad has collaborated with the company’s leadership for nine years, initially at YC and then at OpenAI. His contributions to OpenAI have been extraordinary.

Julia Villagra has taken on the role of Chief People Officer. Her focus will be on enabling the company’s continued global scaling and ensuring OpenAI remains a premier destination for individuals dedicated to building AGI. Julia has demonstrated a strong understanding of the challenges associated with a rapidly scaling company and the ability to cultivate a supportive culture.
