Mozilla has joined the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) as its newest member. The DPGA is a UN-backed initiative focused on advancing open technologies to ensure technology serves the public interest globally. An example of this is Mozilla’s Common Voice, which has been recognized as a Digital Public Good (DPG). This membership follows a significant year for digital policy, during which Mozilla actively advocated for open source AI across Europe, North America, and the UK.
The DPGA operates as a multi-stakeholder initiative, aiming to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It does this by promoting the discovery, development, use, and investment in digital public goods. These goods encompass open-source technology, open data, open and transparent AI models, open standards, and open content, all adhering to principles like privacy and the “do no harm” approach.
This alignment with Mozilla’s mission creates a clear opportunity for collaboration and shared advocacy within the open ecosystem, connecting with allies and developers worldwide. As outlined in the DPGA’s Annual Roadmap for 2025, Mozilla plans to concentrate on three key work streams:
- Promoting DPGs in the Open Source Ecosystem: Mozilla consistently advocates for open-source, public-interest technology as a viable alternative to profit-driven models. Through global advocacy, policy engagement, and research, the organization emphasizes the societal and economic benefits of open source, particularly in AI. Through its involvement with the DPGA, Mozilla will continue to champion improved conditions and funding for open source, public-interest technology.
- DPGs and Digital Commons: Mozilla develops and maintains various open source projects. These include Common Voice, a digital public good featuring over 33,000 hours of multilingual voice data, and applications such as the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client. Mozilla also supports open-source AI through initiatives like Mozilla.ai and its venture fund, Mozilla Ventures.
- Funding Open Source & Public Interest Technology: Building on its open source foundation, Mozilla will continue to fund open source technologies addressing complex sociotechnical challenges. The organization has supported a wide array of impactful technical projects. Starting in Fall 2025, a new grantmaking program will be introduced, serving as an incubator to help community-driven projects achieve “product-community fit” and long-term sustainability.
This membership offers an opportunity to share research, tools, and perspectives with a like-minded audience, fostering partnerships within the DPGA’s diverse community of developers and allies.
Mark Surman, president of Mozilla, stated, “Open source AI and open data aren’t just about tech. They’re about access to technology and progress for people everywhere. As a double bottom line, mission-driven enterprise, Mozilla is proud to be part of the DPGA and excited to work toward our joint mission of advancing open-source, trustworthy technology that puts people first.”
