GitHub Codespaces has entered public preview for GitHub Enterprise Cloud, now including data residency support. This allows users to leverage secure, configurable, and readily available cloud development environments while adhering to stringent data residency mandates. The functionality mirrors that of Codespaces on the standard GitHub platform, with region availability restricted to the account’s chosen region.
What’s new
For customers requiring data residency, Codespaces offers:
- Full feature parity: Access to the complete GitHub Codespaces feature set, including all policies and configurations available in the general offering.
- Data residency compliance: All sensitive data remains within your selected region.
- Regional availability: Codespaces are available in the following data residency regions:
- Australia
- EU
- US
- Japan (coming during preview, before general availability)
Important considerations
To ensure strict data residency, only enterprise or organization-owned codespaces are permitted. User-owned codespaces are not supported for GitHub Enterprise Cloud accounts with data residency. Enterprises and organizations should configure their policies to establish appropriate ownership for Codespaces usage. Further details are available in the documentation on codespace ownership.
