Artificial intelligence is transforming the internet, and user preferences regarding its integration vary widely. Recognizing diverse needs, Firefox has developed AI controls to provide users with choice. Beginning with Firefox 148, scheduled for release on February 24, a dedicated AI controls section will be available in the desktop browser settings. This new section offers a centralized location to block current and upcoming generative AI features in Firefox. Users can also individually manage specific AI features if they opt to use them, allowing for a personalized browsing experience that can be entirely free of AI, or selectively enhanced by it.

One place to manage your AI preferences

Firefox offers AI features to enhance everyday browsing. These features are optional and can be easily enabled or disabled.

Upon launch, the AI controls allow for individual management of the following features:

    • Translations, which assist in browsing the web in a preferred language.
    • Alt text in PDFs, which adds accessibility descriptions to images within PDF documents.
    • AI-enhanced tab grouping, which suggests related tabs and group names.
    • Link previews, which display key points before opening a link.
    • AI chatbot in the sidebar, which enables the use of a chosen chatbot while browsing, including options like Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.

Users have the flexibility to enable some AI features while disabling others. For those who prefer to avoid all AI features within Firefox, a Block AI enhancements toggle is available. Activating this toggle will prevent the display of pop-ups or reminders for both existing and future AI functionalities.

Once AI preferences are configured in Firefox, they are maintained through subsequent browser updates and can be modified at any time.

    Empowering User Choice in Browsing

These AI controls empower users with greater influence over their online experience.

Providing choice is increasingly vital as AI integrates further into browsing. The focus remains on offering users control, regardless of their stance on AI integration.

For early access to AI controls, they will first be available in Firefox Nightly. Feedback can be shared on Mozilla Connect.
