OpenAI has quietly introduced “formatting blocks” within ChatGPT, a new feature designed to adjust the platform’s layout to better suit the specific task being performed.
ChatGPT serves various purposes, such as drafting emails or blog posts. Previously, when a user requested an email, the content would appear in the same standard chat response format as any other query.
While this approach did not diminish GPT’s capabilities compared to other large language models, it also did not offer the most optimized user experience. OpenAI aims to enhance this with a new feature that automatically adapts the user interface.
This “formatting box” functions as a compact editor toolbar, appearing when text is highlighted within ChatGPT’s updated rich-text areas, such as those used for email or writing drafts.
New formatting tool in ChatGPT
Rather than presenting all output as plain chat, ChatGPT now displays drafts as formatted documents, allowing for editing similar to what one would do in applications like Microsoft Word or Gmail.
This feature update for ChatGPT is being rolled out progressively, with plans to incorporate support for additional formats in the future.
