PC gamers may soon receive automatic recaps of their play sessions, featuring achievements, screenshots, and other relevant game data. Microsoft has begun testing this new functionality within its Insiders channels, anticipating a broader release.

A recent blog post from Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Insiders participating in the PC Gaming Preview can now access post-game recaps via the Xbox PC app on Windows. Upon concluding a gaming session, users might encounter a brief summary showcasing key moments, such as captured media, unlocked achievements, and significant in-game occurrences. The feature also includes an option for users to provide feedback to help refine the experience.

While Microsoft did not detail the precise mechanics of the feature, it operates in the background during gameplay. Recaps are more likely to appear after a Game Bar capture or an achievement unlock. There is no indication that a Copilot+ PC is required, suggesting it likely does not utilize a generative AI model similar to Windows Recall.

This functionality aims to “minimize memory and performance impact.” Customization options for the feature are available through Settings > App > Postgame recaps.

An example provided showed a recap for Grounded 2, noting that the player achieved several accomplishments, including a rare one, along with the ability to share the summary with contacts in the Xbox app. It is important to note that this feature does not offer a live sports-style video recap.

This feature appears to be a novel approach in the gaming landscape. While PlayStation consoles typically save screenshots or clips upon earning a trophy or achievement, these are not automatically displayed after a game concludes. The existing Xbox overlay in Windows offers background recording capabilities, but the post-game recaps do not currently seem to integrate with this functionality, even when enabled.

Microsoft also indicated that during a player’s initial game session, and periodically thereafter, a brief check-in might appear, offering recommendations for other games. Users are encouraged to provide feedback on what aspects they found useful, what seemed superfluous, and what they would like to see in future gaming summaries.

The functionality appears to be limited to games that utilize Xbox services, such as those installed via the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, and which include achievements and Xbox multiplayer services. There is no information regarding support for titles from platforms like Steam, GOG, or the Epic Store.

Access to this feature is available through the Xbox Insider Hub app. A broader deployment to Windows PCs is expected following the resolution of any identified issues.
