Sony to Close Bluepoint Games, Studio Known for Acclaimed Remakes

Sony is reportedly closing Bluepoint Games, the PlayStation studio renowned for its highly praised remakes of titles such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. This development follows a recent business review, as reported by Bloomberg. The closure, scheduled for March, will impact approximately 70 staff members.

A spokesperson informed Bloomberg that “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community.” The spokesperson also expressed gratitude for the team’s “passion, creativity and craftmanship.” Sony has not yet provided an official comment on the matter.

Sony acquired Bluepoint Games in 2021, a move that followed the studio’s track record of successful remasters and remakes for PlayStation franchises. These included updates to the first three Uncharted games and Gravity Rush. However, after the acquisition, the studio’s direction shifted. It co-developed God of War: Ragnarok in 2022 and subsequently worked for years on an unannounced live-service God of War game, which Sony canceled in January.

Bluepoint’s closure is part of a broader trend of significant changes affecting PlayStation studios recently. In 2024, Sony shut down Firewalk Studios, the developer of Concord, shortly after the game’s poor launch. Around the same time, mobile studio Neon Koi was also closed. Additionally, Bungie implemented layoffs affecting 220 employees in 2024, with some staff being transferred to Sony Interactive Entertainment.
