X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has officially rolled out its voice and video calling feature to all users. This functionality, which was previously announced, is now widely accessible across the application.

    Understanding the New Calling Feature

By default, this new calling capability is active for all accounts. Users who prefer not to utilize this feature or wish to manage who can contact them can easily adjust their settings within the app.

How to Disable Voice and Video Calls on X

To turn off voice and video calls on X, follow these simple steps:

    • Open the X application on your device.
    • Navigate to the ‘Settings and Privacy’ menu.
    • Select ‘Privacy and safety’.
    • Tap on ‘Direct Messages’.
    • Locate the ‘Enable audio and video calling’ toggle and switch it to the off position.

Within the ‘Direct Messages’ settings, users also have options to control who can initiate calls to their account. Choices include receiving calls from ‘People you follow’, ‘People in your address book’, or ‘Verified users’. This provides more granular control over incoming call permissions.

    Privacy Considerations

It is important to note that these calls utilize your IP address. X states that it masks users’ IP addresses to protect privacy, although specific details regarding this masking process are not publicly elaborated.

X’s Vision for an ‘Everything App’

The introduction of voice and video calls aligns with Elon Musk’s broader vision for X to evolve into an ‘everything app’. This feature was initially announced in August and has now been fully implemented, significantly expanding X’s communication capabilities beyond traditional text-based interactions.
