Microsoft’s AI Dream: A User’s Nightmare in an “Agentic OS”

Microsoft’s plan to transform Windows into an agentic OS raises concerns for many users. This concept, where the operating system acts as an AI agent, presents several potential issues.

While some view agentic operating systems as the future, the widespread integration of AI into everyday products, from social media to productivity tools, prompts questions about its necessity and true value. The term “agentic” might simply be a marketing strategy for a potentially flawed concept.

    All actions will be metered

AI services typically operate on a token-based billing model, where users pay for a specific number of tokens, consumed with each interaction. An agentic OS could extend this model to daily computer use, potentially charging for tasks like asking questions or processing documents, possibly through a tiered subscription. This approach could introduce significant restrictions on how users interact with their own systems.

The idea of paying to use one’s own computer for basic functions, such as moving a mouse or managing a calendar, seems like an unnecessary commercialization. This model raises questions about the value proposition, comparing it to paying for access to a front door or a refrigerator. Such increasing monetization of software is perceived as excessive.

Users face a choice between restrictive, paywalled systems and alternatives like Linux, which offers both cost-free usage and greater freedom.

    There’s a lack of accountability

Many users experience frustration when AI tools, used for tasks like document editing or research, overlook critical information. This often leads to self-blame, despite the AI’s perceived incompetence, as there is no external entity to hold responsible for the errors.

Without clear accountability, there is limited incentive for meaningful improvement. While humans learn from their errors, large language models (LLMs) often fail to demonstrate progress, offering only superficial apologies that do not address underlying issues.

    AI chat interfaces are frustrating

Interacting with AI assistants often requires extensive clarification. Although these tools can generate diverse ideas and information, they frequently lack common sense and natural conversational abilities. Their tendency to be overly accommodating can lead to unproductive exchanges. A literal interpretation of input means that even minor details can disproportionately influence subsequent responses, often resulting in irrelevant information being highlighted.

Beyond their unusual semantic patterns, AI models often produce verbose, low-quality text where valuable insights are difficult to extract. Users frequently find themselves needing to instruct the AI on how to communicate effectively, seeking direct answers rather than exhaustive, encyclopedic responses. This issue is exacerbated with smaller models. The constant effort to establish context and guide the conversation can be exhausting, raising concerns about inadvertently influencing the AI’s output.

Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit various peculiarities, fundamentally operating on mathematical algorithms and word patterns rather than genuine human understanding. Their knowledge is derived from vast text datasets, encompassing both reliable and unreliable sources. While LLMs can handle basic commands, their performance on more complex tasks is inconsistent, often failing to meet expectations.

The unpredictable nature of LLMs leads to a lack of trust, often necessitating conversation resets due to the effort required for correction. While useful for exploration, their factual reliability is questionable. Integrating such an immature and potentially unreliable technology deeply into an operating system, especially one handling critical information, is seen as a significant risk.

In summary, the shift towards agentic operating systems risks transforming personal computing into a corporately controlled, monetized service, diminishing user autonomy. AI’s output is often flawed and lacks inherent integrity, as these machines operate without genuine intelligence, morals, or principles. This unreliability leads to user frustration, making work delegated to such systems an unpleasant experience.

Many observers recognize these issues, suggesting that basing a major operating system on such an undeveloped and problematic technology could lead to significant challenges.

For those who share these concerns and are weary of pervasive AI integration, exploring Linux is highly recommended as a viable alternative.
