David Berg gained significant insight into the waste management sector by working as the first employee at Ohio-based Battle Motors, where he drove a garbage truck across the country.
During this time, he observed that despite the abundance of sales prospecting platforms available, the process of selling within the waste management industry largely remained an offline activity.
Berg noted that companies in the industry primarily relied on traditional methods such as pen and paper, door-to-door visits, and minimal technological integration for CRM or any part of the sales funnel. This observation highlighted an opportunity to innovate and disrupt the market by introducing specialized technology.
To address this gap, Berg launched CommanderAI in early 2024. This platform functions as a customer relationship manager (CRM) and sales prospecting tool specifically designed for waste management, as well as related industrial services like dumpster rentals and industrial recycling.
As CEO of CommanderAI, Berg explained that while general CRMs like Salesforce or HubSpot could be adapted for waste management, their complexity and lack of industry-specific nuances hinder widespread adoption. CommanderAI’s software is also better suited to the unique contract types prevalent in the waste management sector.
Existing platforms often lack the precise data points that waste management companies need to identify potential customers. These companies frequently target small, independent businesses without a strong online presence, or new construction projects that are not widely advertised. CommanderAI utilizes AI to compile and present this critical information to its users.
Berg emphasized that while such data is publicly available, segmenting and repurposing it into a useful format required extensive effort, which is where the AI large language model pipeline becomes crucial due to the many specific intricacies within the waste industry.
The waste management industry in the U.S. is substantial, having generated over $100 billion in revenue in 2024, according to an industry trade organization. Its participants vary widely, from small haulers with a few trucks to major corporations like Waste Management, valued at $90 billion.
CommanderAI’s approach is to assist companies in selling more efficiently, rather than replacing their existing sales teams or fundamentally altering their established methods, acknowledging their decades of experience.
The company’s platform is scalable, designed to serve businesses ranging from single-truck operations to large enterprises, with a current focus on mid-to-large regional players. CommanderAI is currently experiencing success with companies specializing in medical and hazardous waste management.
CommanderAI recently secured $5 million in a seed funding round. This round was led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with additional participation from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. The capital will be used to significantly expand the company’s sales team and further develop the product, incorporating features such as mapping, marketing, and routing capabilities.
Berg noted that many investors typically do not have significant investments in waste management, an industry with only about 10 active software providers. A considerable part of the fundraising process involved educating investors about the target market and its operational dynamics.
The company also plans to expand into adjacent industries when the timing is appropriate.
A long-term goal for CommanderAI is to have 30% of the waste management industry utilizing its AI platform as a primary source for AI tools and other technological solutions within their tech stack.
